Sumak rugs draw inspiration from a wide range of Caucasian and Anatolian tribal weaving traditions, spanning regions of present-day Turkey, Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and beyond.
They are particularly known for their intricate geometric and zoomorphic designs, often arranged in highly rhythmic, repeating compositions. Unlike other flatweave rugs, such as kilims, Sumaks are not reversible. This is a result of the distinctive weaving technique, which creates a patterned front and a more textured reverse.
The Sumak technique extends beyond floor coverings and has historically been used to create a variety of handmade textiles, including bags, saddle covers, storage pieces, and other utilitarian objects. The result is a weaving tradition that is as functional as it is decorative, with a rich visual language rooted in the tribal communities that have carried these techniques across generations.
